Rivers School & New Yorkers

Susanna, Max, Nick, Jaquelyn, Amanda, Kate & Abby

Week of December 19-22nd

Rivers School from Massachusetts brought a lot of students down to help out New Orleans! They came just in time to learn how to lay flooring. On Wednesday we were joined by three girls who go to college in New York, but are from Ethiopia and.... oh, gosh, I forget. Writing blogs 2 weeks late is not the way to do it!

I'll write more soon, but I was really hoping to get Miss Yolanda's house completed by Christmas. Sometimes things just don't happen like you hope, and we'll continue to try and complete the house as quickly as possible while still holding the same quality standards. She'll be in soon, and Miss Yolanda is more than happy to just move into the house, whenever it's good and ready. She's such a wonderful homeowner to be working for.

I was excited and blessed to have been able to go home for Christmas~ Hugs awaited, cookies were on the table, and the tree was on it's stand. I"m so proud of my family and all that they do while at home. If you're interested, check out www.soergels.com and if you're ever in the Pittsburgh area, you had better look them up!

More to post soon - <3 Leisl

College Breaks

First and foremost:

Happy 23rd Birthday to my sister, Deonna! (Dec. 14)
Happy 29th (*wink*) to Becky (past vol) (Dec. 15)
Happy 13th Birthday to Miss Yolanda's son, Justin! (Dec. 15)

It's been QUITE the busy week!

We had 2 awesome crews at the site. 1/2 of them were from Olivet College in Michigan, and the other 1/2 were from Lindsay Wilson College in Kentucky.

Luanne, SBP Siding Queen, worked at my site all week, with a crew of 9-11 peeps. Unfortunately I hardly got to know any of them, though, obviously (cuz they're volunteeeeering!) they're cool. The siding on the house is nearly complete - just the front of the house and the upper 4" or so around the entire house needs a little work. Looks beautiful, thanks to Shauna, Justin, Marcie, Amber, Rafael, J.R., Austin, Jessica, and Shameka! :)

I had somewhere between 4-6 volunteers inside the house with me all week. Hannah & Betsy spent a lot of time tiling the boys' shower, while Cristin & Alison were painting or working on tiling Miss Yolanda's shower. Lauren & Kyle had different jobs throughout the week, including laying hardee board in the girls' bathroom, helping me texture the walls, paint trim, cut out windowsills, and lay baseboards. Rafael helped us out on Thursday & Friday to tile a bathroom while Hannah & Betsy were pulled to another site to help finish a house by tiling their bathroom too (they were tile'd out by the end of the week!).

Monday I broke the news to everyone that they would be meeting New Orleans Saints Football Player, Roman Harper, on our site Tuesday afternoon. Of course, everyone being from out-of-state, we all had to do a little bit of statistics research on Mr. Harper, and the girls made sure to look up his photos (we approve!).

Tuesday was a little crazy. We had nola Saints TV crews, the Times-Picayune newspaper, Miss Yolanda's friends & family, SBP reps, United Way representatives, and random neighbors begin trickling on site around 3pm. It's a little unnerving to be using a skilsaw with someone 1 ft from your face...but Kyle & Lauren still cut out some great pieces of hardee board for the floors! They all worked later than normal so that the documentary dudes could get video of them tiling, placing siding, and painting.

TV crews, Newspapers, SBP people, United Way Representatives, and Miss Yolandas Friends & Family come to meet Roman Harper, funder of Miss Yolanda's home rebuild

New Orleans Saint Football player, Roman Harper, & Miss Yolanda & family

Roman is a GREAT guy. Super down to earth, easy to talk to, smiley, and has his heart in the right place...not to mention he is a fantastic football player. He and his teammates are providing the funding to rebuild the homes of 3 different families this year with their "Hope for the Holidays" campaign run through the United Way. Janiel, Miss Yolanda's 8-yr-old daughter, gravitated to Harper and took charge of the whole night, showing him around and explaining to him that she wants a pink & purple room with a "justin beiber" & princesses theme.

Janiel helped get her room ready on saturday!

The volunteer crew stayed at the house til 6:00, a big thing to ask when you figure they arrive on site at 8:30 and on a typical day are gone by 4:30. Thanks guys for making that night a success!

Thursday the house transformed. The electrician crew came in - Elijah, Zack, & Sarah... and Wow!!! The light switches, outlets, lights, and ceiling fans were all installed... *sigh* so happy :)

Electrician Sarah hangin' Miss Yolanda's pretty fans! Thanks to Elijah & Zack too!

Friday was a half day (and the final day) for the Michiganians. Which left Friday afternoon and Saturday morning a little quieter than the rest of the week. On Saturday, Lauren made a beautiful "Saints" wreath to hang on their door. Lauren left before Miss Yolanda got to see it... which made Miss Y so sad! She loved the wreath Lauren, awesome job!

Lauren & the wreath she made for the family!

We were blessed to have Kelsey arrive on site Saturday morning as well, and was joined in the afternoon by Clark ( a past vol that helped on Mary's house!). The two of them worked diligently at laying our baseboard, and pointed out plenty of places where the walls and the floors are simply & sadly not the straightest in the world. Nothing that we can't deal with, but adding baseboard really opens your eyes to those sorts of things! Kelsey is originally from Wisconsin & moved to New Orleans about a month ago - she's super cool and hopefully she'll be back many days to come. Clark is a project manager for a construction company, and has lots of knowledge with building, and a great heart to be coming out and volunteering with SBP on his days off! He and I semi-shook-hands on him coming out one day for every house that I work on (2 down!).

Kelsey & Clark come by on Saturday to help out!

So... I told you guys long ago that the goal is to finish by Christmas. Well, I STILL haven't given up! ...but, things are really gonna have to go super smoothly with flooring, and I'll need a decent number of volunteers (which i'm expecting 10 tomorrow- yay!). Unfortunately (though i'm very excited) i'll be leaving to go home on Thursday afternoon and won't return to the house til the 29th. The office officially set our goal date as Dec. 31st. The vols have worked fantastically together, you all have gotten a TON done, and the office has done a great job stackin' me with lots of eager volunteers. Unfortunately, we did have 2 days of zero volunteers, and another week with very low numbers, which makes it difficult to try and hit goals like these...

...Which is a perfect segway to saying "Please come back & volunteer with us again! We can't do this without you! Tell your friends, get a group together, come get stuff done!!!"

Listening to Christmas tunes as I type. Happy Holidays to you all :)

Carhartts & long johns

Miss Yolanda, 2 neighborhood boys & me

I live in the South? I'm bundled up like I'm back in Lake Placid! Freezin' our tush's off this week, but still progressing!

It was to be a slow week. There were only to be 8 people TOTAL volunteering with the St. Bernard Project. One of my good friends here- fellow Site Sup, Alex, joined me for the week. And then I was lucky to be assigned 4 of the 8 volunteers to be working at Miss Yolandas... it says a lot since we currently have 18 different houses being worked on. Miss Yolanda is of highest priority at the moment.

There was a mighty little force of site supervisors at Miss Yolandas on Monday and Tuesday - Marissa & Cody joined up with Alex & I, and they were able to completely finish all the underhouse insulation, as well as some siding, and some work in the interior of the house.

Site Sup Alex!

Our 'new' volunteers this week were Hazel and Hallie from Oklahoma! The mom & daughter pair have been coming down to help the New Orleans community for 4 (or was it 5?) years now. They decided that this year they would actually try to see some of the city, and be a little bit of a tourist... so the two of them worked hard at the tasks I set them in the mornings, and when the work was complete, they headed off to venture. The two of them even opened my eyes to a few new places to see, including a trip to Biloxi, MS beach when it warms up! Thanks for your hard work ladies (and I forgot to have you sign Miss Yolanda's book... so I stuck your name in there, send me an email if you want a specific note!)

Hallie doing the last skim of mud in the closets!

Hi Hazel!

Bob stopped by on Monday too and helped us get cranking along on some more seams to finish up mudding. He's such a great guy, and I hope to be working with him some more in the upcoming weeks.

And then there was Rick & Becky... Or Ricky & Beck as I kept saying on accident. Three full weeks of working with SBP, and over 2 weeks were dedicated to bringing Miss Yolanda home and working with me. Tim Phibbs was here for 8 days or so, and I thought nobody would outrun his stretch working with me. But Rick & Becky emerged from their RV from a camp about 10-15 miles away, every morning, sleeves rolled up and ready to go, for a total of 11 ( out of 16) days with me.

Becky & Me! (after texturing the kitchen, the oldest boy's bedroom, and the boys' bathroom!)

Rick & Becky heading onward to Florida!

There are some people that build you up, and some people that cut you down. There are some people who make every day brighter, and others that make them dimmer. Rick & Becky were with me ELEVEN days. If they were the cutter-downers, the dimmer lighters, the type of people that think it's their way or the highway...I wouldn't have made it. Instead, I found myself comforted to know that the 2 of them would be with me the following day. I was relaxed (ok rick, ok i remember that ONE time...) haha! I found myself missing my own family, the more and more I worked with the two of them. They were supportive of me, supportive of the project, supportive of each other (though they hassled each other all the time which I only found to be endearing), and just seem to have a great grasp on what 'life' is all about. They brought pictures of their children, I learned about their past lives, and learned more about their lives that are now filled with wintertime roadtrips like a pair of birds flying south for winter. They are really wonderful people, and I hope I get to see them again when the swing back past in March, headed back for Wyoming! Thanks Rick(y) & Beck(y)!

Kevin & Karen

We had a 'special' guest on Friday, as my friend ( & fellow site sup), Adrian, had his brother Kevin and girlfriend Karen on site to work on the house. The two of them painted the entire day, finishing up the 2nd coats of paint in several rooms.

We're lookin' at 2 weeks til Christmas, folks! Doing everything we can to get the Julien family home for the holidays!

Movin' Right Along!

Is it obvious that I'm finding less and less time to blog?

My camera has been quite finicky (phonetically speaking) and has begun to turn on but go into a 'system failure' mode... which I can 'cure' by turning it on and off about 5-10 times, until it finally decides it wants to work again. Needless to say, I'm even slower now about the photos - I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna keep up with this blog, I promise!

We started the week off a little lacking in numbers. Rick & Becky joined me again (they were transferred to my site last Friday) and I put them back to work on floating seams. On Tuesday, nearly the entire Site Supervisor team from SBP came to my site and helped me hang one (and the only remaining) room of drywall, and learned how to hang siding on the house. All but one side wall were completed with drywall in the very front room (Miss Yolanda's ''saints'' room). We nearly doubled the amount of siding that had been hung the week previous.

Wednesday things got CRAZY. I turned around Wednesday morning to find three "old farts" (self-proclaimed! I swear!) standing in the doorway. I started to explain the homeowners' story, and how to do some of the tasks at hand...but they certainly wouldn't have it... they were there to WORK and GET THINGS DONE and there was no stopping them, and no time for shenanigans. Over the course of 2 days, these 3 guys jumped Yolanda's house ahead by at least a day, maybe 2, in terms of the amount of work they got done, and to the caliber that they performed it. They were great mudders, and with the quick working hands of Rick & Becky, they were Caaruuusing through all the tasks.

Thursday I got the opportunity to lead the Glover Park Group from D.C. and NY. Fourteen of them jumped off the bus to help with Miss Yolanda's house. Adrian, a fellow site sup, lead a group of 8 underneath the house to complete the insulation between the floor joices. Dirt clung to everyone's clothing, in their ears, etc. They had to scoop out years of junk and some of Hurricane Katrina's old play toys out from under the house... even a wooden BB gun made it into our 'findings' pile (congrats Craig!) The other 6 helped mud inside the house - up n' down ladders, emptying pan after pan of mud, and learning the amount of work it takes just to make a wall seem 'seamless'! The group advanced the mudding stages on several rooms, helping us continue to propel forward to finish Miss Yolanda's home! Thanks GPG!

Friday the 3 ''old farts'' John, John, Richy - and Rick and Becky all came back to the house to continue mudding and begin priming the Kitchen and the 2nd Bedroom. Three other folks from Tulane joined us to help as well - Jorge (Panama) and Christina & Alex (Guatemala) spent the majority of the day hanging Tyvek under the house. The three of them worked pretty much on their own and accomplished a lot! Next week we'll only need to hang Tyvek in a small 4' strip along one side of the house.

By next Friday, I hope to have all the rooms primed and textured, and hopefully several of them painted! Fingers crossed that all goes well, and that our doors are indeed delivered next Friday like i'm wishing!

Thanks for a great week everyone!

45 n' J.C.

November 21-25th, 2011

Mud. Mud. Mud. We've come to affectionately call it (thanks to the Queens University ladies) - the 45, and the J.C. (joint compound).

A fantastic, warmer than normal week!

These peeps not only decided to volunteer for the week - BUT they even chose to do so despite it being Thanksgiving. No gathering around the dinner table with friends and family - instead, the ladies from Queens University in NC served Thanksgiving dinner at the Convention Center downtown, and then went to their volunteer housing and made their OWN Thanksgiving dinner Annnnnnd they gave me 2nds on Friday... awesome, awesome, people. Thanks ladies for all your service this week throughout the city!

Queens University of NC were with me all week!

Kait, Kariel, Alecia, and Chelsea

I met Tom back in September(ish). He's the roommate of my SBP friend & coworker, Josh. Ironically, Tom and I got to know each other much better the weekend before he volunteered - and soon came to find out he'd be helping with Miss Yolanda's house for 3 days with me! It was a blessing, as he and his friend Kaycee helped get my bathrooms underway. Both Tom and Kaycee are fellow AmeriCorps members, and work at Langston Hughes and Bard College.

Tom n' Kaycee in their 'mudders' gear... with us M-W

I've had couples volunteer with me. I've had mother-daughter pairs help me. I've never had an entire family volunteer with me, and OH MY GOSH was it crazy, and a blast! The crew of Annie & Andy, with Liz, Emily, Mark, and Tiffany were all family/friend & bf... Some moments I felt like I was hanging out with the Brady Bunch, and then i'd turn the corner, and hear things like "you're not good at that. Eew oooo gosh. Maybe you should find something else to do.." then a ''shut up'' ... so i'd come intervene, and they would be laughing or actually switching jobs. Hahaaha it was all in good fun and made me miss the 'family dynamic' that comes with the territory of being siblings and working with your parents... huh, don't sound like a foreign tale to me!

Friday I also had a couple join who had volunteered with the project all week, but were sent to my site on the last day due to some equipment breaking at another house. Rick & Becky (perhaps the only Wyoming'ins that I know) RV-trip the United States every winter to escape the cold. They have no plans, but to be in Florida on the 18th of December. The two of them floated a lot of Miss Yolanda's bedroom, and would return the following week as well (so, more on them later!)

Miss Yolanda's house is coming along.... trying, trying, trying to get her home by Christmas. We're all working hard for it!

Nunsense.

St. John's Lutheran Stone Church - Harmony, PA

I was raised Lutheran. My mom and dad took us to church every Sunday, where my sister and I would join the 4 other kids that were part of the congregation for Sunday School. Our Sunday School teacher was also our Pre-K teacher, and nearly half of the 40-or-so members were farmers. Small, cute, and personal.

I got a lot of ‘Catholic’ exposure through my aunt & uncle’s church, where my sister and I attended when my parents had to work. Quite frankly, mass was a LOT of work! Up, down, kneel, sing, wear fancy clothes, scoot around 1000 people, couldn’t have communion, up, down, kneel, cross your arms shoulders elbows knees eyeballs… it was just --- phew.

So, on Saturday the 12th, I read the schedule to find I would be leading a group of nuns. Flashbacks of the days in that big ol’ Catholic church flooded my mind. I started thinking about the nuns that I’d met at Kaki & Ray’s church. As I remembered them, the nuns at St. Margaret Mary’s were quiet, gentle, and soft-spoken...– I needed the nuns to hang heavy, 12 ft-long, ½ inch thick, sheets of drywall in 5 rooms for Miss Yolanda…

My "kindergartners"

Then I scrolled down to the number of volunteers I should expect for the week.

TWENTY-THREE.

I didn’t sleep much on Sunday night. That’s 10 more people than I’d ever lead, even though I would have ½ the crew working with Luanne at preparing the house for vinyl siding…

I made sure to eat my Wheaties, and headed to the site Monday morning. Around 8:30 my first volunteer arrived, Tim, a Canadian who has lived quite an adventurous life, and is traveling North & Central America with his girlfriend, Sandra. Tim had volunteered the previous week at another site. “Hey, Tim, did they tell you who else is volunteering with you?” …”nope” … “twenty-two nuns.” … Tim chuckled, and I joined him. There’s something about the image of 22 women dressed in black robes and hats hanging drywall…and having Tim be the only man of the group.

Cars pulled up from every angle around 10:00, and soon the house was filled with chitter chatter. We had 5 men join the crowd, which then opened my eyes to the fact that “nuns build” doesn’t mean that only nuns would be joining us – but also men & women who attend the Catholic church as well.

Twenty-Four people on one site. All mass-goers, providing mass progress, amidst mass chaos. End result? Mass success.

We had 11 people outside of the house working on scraping paint, painting the porch, boxing in the eaves of the roof, and prepping other areas for vinyl siding. Jack, Tim, Mike, Kathy, Kathy, Jill, Sara, Donna, Ludy, Maureen, and Lori. Unfortunately for me, but fortunately for the Project, Sara & Jill were used elsewhere during the week to effectively use their mechanics & electrical backgrounds. Luanne helped lead this crew Monday through Wednesday. The group was so amiable & motivated, that after Luanne left on Wednesday, they continued to basically lead themselves on the house Thursday and Friday. The house porch was spic n’ span by Friday, white as can be, and about 7/8 of the one side of the house had vinyl siding. All the eaves were boxed in too, thanks to Josh, a 19-year-old guy who was just walking by the house on Wednesday, decided to volunteer for the day, and continued to come back for Thursday and Friday as well.

The interior of the house is more my specialty, and so we had 12 people or so that took ownership of drywalling the rooms of the house.

I usually try to match up skill levels, physical ability, and the comfort of a volunteer with a task that would appeal to them, and would also best suit them.

“Cash Bill” and “100-dollah-Bill” and John were consistently my ceiling sheetrockers. I’m sure they’re probably still sore to this day.

SRM, Carole, Janet, Marie-ce, Theresa, Betty Jane, Margaret, and Marty tackled closets, and walls that needed drywall. Rooms were being completed before my eyes, and I became deaf to the sound of the drill bit sinking screws. I found that Terry, one of the nuns, was very skilled and soon I had her hanging ceiling sheetrock for closets and tackling tasks alone, which she was more than happy to do. It took until Friday before she pulled me aside (after having just come down off a ladder, mudding the ceiling) …. “Leisl. I just want you to know… I’m Eighty.” Well I’ll be darned. “Never slow down, stay active, love life.”
Amen, Sister (I’ve never said that literally). Amen.

The house has walls! I was very blessed to work with such a large, driven, happy group – who also got a ton done for Miss Yolanda. This will certainly be a week I will always remember.

Thank you, Jack, Tim, $100 Bill, Cash Bill, Mike, Josh, John, Tyrone, Janet, SRM, Carole, Marie-ce, Theresa, Betty Jane, Terry, Kathy (vinyl), Kathy (mudder), Jill, Sara, Donna, Ludy, Margaret, Marty, Lori, and Maureen.
